Valentine's Day

O amor está no ar! Fevereiro é um mês para levar sua namorada para o cinema, ou seu namorado para um piquenique no parque... Quanto romantismo! Isso porque nesse mês é comemorado nos Estados Unidos e outros países o Dia dos Namorados, ou Valentine’s Day. Mas, por que ele é comemorado nesse mês?

Essa data teve origem como um feriado cristão, homenageando o santo do Cristianismo, São Valentim. Através dos anos, ela se tornou uma celebração cultural, religiosa, comercial e, principalmente, romântica.

O bispo São Valentim viveu durante Império Romano, no século 3, quando muitas guerras estavam em curso. Foi quando o Imperador Cláudio II proibiu o casamento, porque acreditava que soldados solteiros poderiam ser melhores guerreiros. Mas isso não impediu Valentim de realizar muitas uniões ilegais.

Também se acredita que o Santo realizou vários milagres, como restaurar a visão da filha de um carcereiro. E a lenda foi crescendo cada vez mais: Acredita-se que o Santo deixou uma carta para a filha desse carcereiro, assinando como “Seu Valentim”, como uma forma de despedida antes de ele ser executado.

Nos EUA em países como Japão, Coréia do Sul, África do Sul, Filipinas, Canadá, México, Austrália e em partes da Europa, a celebração do "Valentine's" se dá através do envio de cartões, caixas de chocolates e flores para namorado ou namorada, amigos e professores.

Love is in the air! February is a month to take your girlfriend to the movies, or your boy to a picnic in the park… How romantic! That’s because in this month it’s celebrated in the USA the Valentine’s Day. However, why is it celebrated in this month?

This date takes back to a Christian holiday, paying homage to the Christian Saint named Valentine. Over the course of time, it has become a cultural, religious, commercial and mainly romantic celebration.

The bishop Saint Valentine lived during the Roman Empire, in the 3rd Century, when there were several wars taking place. It was when the emperor Claudio the Second prohibited people from getting married, because he believed that single soldiers made better warriors. However, that didn’t stop Valentine from performing several illegal ceremonies.

It was also believed that the Saint performed many miracles, as restoring the vision of the daughter of a jailer. The legend just got more and more famous: It is said that the Saint left a letter to this daughter, signing as “Your Valentine”, as a way to bid farewell before his own execution.

In the USA and in other countries, such as Japan, South Korea, South Africa, Philippines, Canada, Mexico, Australia and in parts of Europe, the Valentine’s Day celebration revolves around sending cards, boxes of chocolate and flowers to your loved one, friends and teachers.
