Carnival and Ash Wednesday

O Brasil está em festa em Fevereiro! Chegou o tão esperado Carnaval, evento em que o povo vai às ruas desfilar fantasiado das mais variadas formas e cores. Isso nos faz pensar: quando essa celebração tão extravagante teve origem?

O Carnaval talvez tenha suas origens mais remotas até mesmo antes da Idade Média, e guarda relação direta com o Cristianismo.

Encontramos nele elementos de civilizações tão antigas quanto as da Mesopotâmia, Grécia Antiga e Romana. A ideia central era um mundo “de cabeça para baixo”, ou seja, em que a ordem das coisas fosse invertida temporariamente. Essa característica era encontrada em uma festa mesopotâmica. Gregos e romanos, por sua vez, realizavam festas em homenagem a Dionísio (Baco, para os Romanos), em que promoviam bebedeiras e outros prazeres carnais.

Adentrando a Idade Média, e com o Cristianismo se estabelecendo com a Igreja Católica, tentou-se ter controle sobre as festas, que eram tidas como um “exagero” e “pecaminosas”. Foi assim que a igreja estabeleceu a Quaresma (período de 40 dias anterior à Semana Santa e marcada pela restrição.

E como a História opera de maneiras curiosas, o Carnaval chegou ao Brasil e se tornou o que é hoje. Porém, toda festa tem um fim, e com o Carnaval, ele se dá com a Quarta Feira de Cinzas.

A Quarta-Feira de Cinzas é uma data do calendário Católico, sendo o momento que inaugura a já mencionada Quaresma.

Durante a Quarta-Feira de Cinzas, são realizadas missas marcadas pela imposição de cinzas. A imposição de cinzas demonstra a intenção de devoção, e o caráter transitório do ser humano na Terra (o homem veio do pó e ao pó retornará).

Brazil is all about festivities in February! The so awaited Carnival is finally here, a time when people gather in the streets dressed up in a myriad of different shapes and colors. This begs the question: when did this so flamboyant celebration come about?

Carnival’s origins maybe trace back to a time earlier than the Middle Ages, and bear a direct connection with Christianism. 

There can be found elements of cultures as old as the Old Mesopotamia, Ancient Greece and the Romans. The key idea was one of an “up-side-down” world, that is, that the order of things was temporarily inverted. This feature can be found in Mesopotamian festivities. Greeks and Romans, on the other hand, held parties in homage to Dionysus (Baco to the Romans), in which hard drinking and other carnal pleasures were encouraged.

Into the Middle Ages, and with Christianism establishing itself with the Catholic Church, the festivities were slowly gotten control of, which were seen as “excessive” and “sinful”. This is how the Catholic Church brought about the Lent (a 40-day period prior to the Holy Week and marked by restraint.

And as History curiously works its way, Carnival arrived in Brazil and became what it is today. However, every party has an ending, and Carnival’s one is the Ash Wednesday.

The Ash Wednesday is a date in the Catholic Calendar which marks the beginning of the Lent, that we mentioned earlier.

During the Ash Wednesday, masses are held, marked by the imposition of ashes. This imposition represents devotion, and the transitory aspect of humans on Earth (Men came and will return to Ash).
